The island of Bali is full of tropical forests and gorgeous beaches. It is also full of used tires clogging landfills. Fortunately, at least one company is finding a way to make good use of them: Indosole. The company employs local Balinese to cut off the tread of old tires and then to sew them onto sandals. Look at the bottom of a pair of Indosoles and you can literally see the tire tread and sense the years of road wear they’ve had.

While the environmental benefit of Indosole sandals is eye catching, it is their feet pleasing quality that will ultimately make you most happy. Atop the tire sole is a layer of sturdy rubber, and atop that is a soft covering—Vondrous found the tan burlap most comfortable but love the look of the green grass mat. $45
